Brushless Motor and Controller spec for FF models up to 250-300gm AUW

These notes offer a brushless power unit conversion for common free flight models in the range 30- 36"span and 200-300gm AUW. Typically this might be Competitor, Gypsy, Tomboy, Cardinal, Slicker 42, Trenton Terror 42 and perhaps Matador.

Power unit cost: £48.84 for 69gm total. This spec will give up to 60Watts of power and about 170gm thrust. (Hint: a Mills P75 flat out does 55Watts on a good day, if you can ever get it run and provided you do not mind throwing your filthy, smelly oil soaked airframe away at the end of the season.)

If this is your first foray into electric I will be happy to make a loom, wire stuff up, check the controller out and make sure the power unit runs up OK.
This Power Unit will give 8-12 flights of 25s before re-charge. All the components specified have been intensively tested in many models over a 3 year period. This a good starting point for the first timer.

Chargers

Buy a decent charger which displays battery voltage, battery current, mah consumed and time. Do not run your LiPo's blind. Make sure start up volts are > 3.0v/cell and end volts are 4.2v/cell and the mah consumed bears some relationship to the stated capacity. LiPo's are high power density but and need to be treated with caution, unlike NiCad which can and are treated badly. LiPo will not put up with much abuse. Value chargers are …………

Ignore any 'budget charger' without a display….more trouble than they are worth.
